On this day, 73 years ago, May 27, 1952 (May 4, 1952, the European Defense Group Treaty was signed. After the outbreak of the Korean War, the United States attached great importance to rearming Germany to strengthen the defense of Western Europe. At the meeting of foreign ministers of the United States, Britain and France held in September 1950, U.S. Secretary of State Acheson proposed that a European army with the Federal Army as the backbone should be established as soon as possible. France has many doubts about rearming West Germany and demands appropriate restrictions on this. After negotiations, it was decided that the Federal Republic of Germany would join NATO by joining the European Defense Group, which imposed certain restrictions on the issue of armed forces in the Federal Republic of Germany. On May 27, 1952, the foreign ministers of France, West Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Rwanda signed the "European Defense Group Treaty", also known as the "European Military Treaty" in Paris. The preamble to the treaty claims to unify a certain number of troops from the relevant arms of the contracting parties into a "supranational" defense group. The treaty governs the relationship between the European Defense Group and NATO. The troops of the Defense Group are affiliated with the NATO Supreme Command and stipulate that 55 divisions of the European Defense Group force will be established within three years, of which 40 are standing divisions and 15 are reserve divisions. When the treaty was signed, the United States and Britain guaranteed France's security, but Britain did not formally participate in the defense group. After the Korean Armistice, the international situation eased, and France's domestic power to veto the European Defense Group expanded. The National Assembly refused to ratify the European Defense Group Treaty in August 1954, causing the European Defense Group Treaty to fail to enter into force.
