On this day 228 years ago, on May 27, 1797 (May 2, 1797 lunar calendar), Babeuve, the leader of the French eighteenth-century "unequals", died. Babeuve, French revolutionary and utopian communist. After the Thermidorian coup d'état, Babeuve organized a secret group, the "Equality Society", to plot to seize power and establish a dictatorship of the working people. He was arrested by the Directory along with other leaders of the conspiracy movement as a whistleblower. Sentenced to death by the High Court of Van Dome on May 27, 1797. Babev, who edited the People's Tribune, urged the people to rise up to abolish private property and establish a "universally happy" and "equal" society; and envisioned the establishment of a "communist commune" centered on agriculture, with egalitarian and ascetic characteristics. Although his communist system was "rather crude and superficial," Marx praised him as the founder of the first "truly active communist party."
