Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On November 2, 1983, the United Nations General Assembly resolution demanded the immediate withdrawal of foreign troops from Grenada
On this day, 42 years ago, November 2, 1983 (September 28, 1983 in the lunar calendar), the UN General Assembly resolution required the immediate withdrawal of foreign troops from Grenada. On November 2, 1983, the plenary session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on the situation in Grenada by an overwhelming majority of 108 votes in favor, 9 votes against, and 27 abstentions, calling on all countries to strictly respect Grenada's sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and demanding the immediate cessation of armed interference and the immediate withdrawal of foreign troops from Grenada. The resolution expressed "serious concern" and "deeply deplored" the armed intervention in Grenada that occurred at that time. It also reaffirms that Grenada should enjoy the inalienable sovereignty of freely determining its own political, economic and social systems and developing its international relations without any form of external interference, interference, subversion, coercion or threat. The Congress also passed an amendment proposed by Belgium, which read: "Calls for free elections to be held as soon as possible so that the people of Grenada can democratically choose their own government." The plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly on this day was held at the request of Grenada. The resolution adopted at the meeting was jointly proposed by Nicaragua and Zimbabwe. From the strong reactions of various countries to the brazen invasion of Grenada by the United States and the resolution passed by the UN General Assembly today, it can be clearly seen that the international community and world public opinion are on the side of the victims. Late at night on October 25, Deputy Representative of Grenada Jacobs delivered an impassioned and righteous speech at the emergency meeting of the Security Council. He profoundly and forcefully refuted various unreasonable excuses for the United States to invade Grenada and was praised by United Nations people. The Coordinating Bureau of Non-Aligned Countries issued a statement after holding an emergency meeting in New York from October 26 to 28, strongly condemning the armed intervention of the United States in Grenada, stating that "this incident constitutes a threat to international peace and security." The statement called for an immediate end to interference in Grenada and the immediate withdrawal of all foreign troops from Grenada. Representatives of some countries and United Nations personages expressed regret that the United Nations failed to stop aggression in a timely and effective manner. Some people told reporters that in the face of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan, Vietnam's invasion of Cambodia, and the U.S. invasion of Grenada, the United Nations failed to take effective measures to stop the repeated acts of aggression. This is indeed disappointing. Some people in the third world worry that the invasion of Grenada will increase tensions in the Caribbean and thus affect peace and stability in Central America. People are asking: When will the United States withdraw from Grenada? When will the situation in Grenada return to normal? Will the United States still make a move against a certain country in Central America? These are issues of great concern and discussion among many people inside and outside the United Nations. In the battle, 16 Americans were killed, 77 were injured, and 3 were missing. About 630 people Reagan called "Cuban thugs" were captured during the military operation against Grenada.
