Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On June 15, 1645, the Qing Dynasty issued a shaving order
On this day, 380 years ago, on June 15, 1645 (May 22, 1645 in the lunar calendar), the Qing government issued a hair shaving order in Jiangnan. The Han people have attached great importance to clothing since ancient times. There is a saying in the Book of Filial Piety: "The body, hair and skin, accept it from your parents, and dare not damage it. This is the beginning of filial piety." Han people were not allowed to shave their hair after they reached adulthood. Both men and women tied their hair into a bun and placed it on the top of their heads. The Manchu hairstyles are very different from those of the Han people. Men of this ethnic group shave their hair on the front head and weave it into a long braid. The main features of Han costumes are cross-collar, right lapel, and unbuttoned, while the main features of full costumes are stand-up collars, double-lapels, and buckles. The Qing Dynasty was founded by the Manchu people living in northeastern China. Before entering the Pass, the Manchu rulers had already implemented the policy of "shaving hair and changing clothes" outside the Pass. All conquered Han people were forced to change their hairstyles and clothes, and Ming soldiers who surrendered were also required to shave their heads and change clothes as a sign of submission. When the Qing army entered the Pass in 1644 (the 17th year of Chongzhen of the Ming Dynasty), it issued a "hair-shaving order". Due to the dissatisfaction and resistance of the Han people, this order was publicly repealed. After the Qing army marched into Jiangnan in 1645, Sun Zhiqian, a Han minister, was ostracized by other Han ministers. In his anger, he proposed to the regent Dorgon to reissue the "hair-shaving order". Therefore, on June 15, 1645, Dorgon ordered the issuance of another "shaving order", stipulating: "Officials and people across the country, within and outside the capital, are limited to ten days, and Zhili and all provinces and localities are limited to ten days." Its slogan is: "leave the head without hair, leave hair without head." On July 9, 1645, the Qing court promulgated the "Change of Service Order", which stipulated that "since officials and people have shaved their hair, they should abide by the system of this dynasty." The Han people have waged one struggle after another to protect the cultural relics and clothes handed down from generation to generation. Qing rulers violently suppressed this, such as the Jiading Three Massacres in 1645, which was related to "shaving hair and changing clothes." The endless struggle lasted for 37 years, and the final result was the victory of the Manchu feudal rulers. Most of the living people of the Han nationality shaved their hair and braids and changed to Manchu clothes; Those who insist on not changing their clothes will either be killed, fled overseas, or fled into empty doors and cultivate with their hair.
