U.S. President Donald Trump met with Turkish President Erdogan at the White House on the 25th. Trump told media reporters at the start of the talks: ¡°I hope he (Erdogan) stops buying oil from Russia.¡±

The talks between the two sides lasted about two hours. When saying goodbye to Erdogan, Trump briefly told reporters that it was a "good meeting", but did not disclose more details. Trump said he believed Erdogan would stop buying oil from Russia, but did not disclose whether Erdogan made a commitment to this.

U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Thomas Barak said the two presidents discussed all major issues in U.S.-Turkish relations. When asked whether Turkey was willing to stop buying oil from Russia, Barak replied: "You have to ask them (the Turkish side) that the Turkish side has not responded to the content of the talks.

This is Erdogan's first visit to the White House since 2019. Turkey, a NATO member, signed a contract with Russia in 2017 to purchase the S-400 air defense missile system, with strong opposition from the United States and NATO. After Russia began delivering the S-400 in July 2019, the United States banned Turkey from participating in the manufacture and purchase of F-35 fighter jets, and sanctioned senior officials in the Turkish defense industry.
