The Philippine Islands, which stretch across the South China Sea and the western Pacific, are an important node of the South China Sea-Bus Strait-Western Pacific navigation route. As a former colony of the United States, the Philippines and the United States signed a Joint Defense Treaty in 1951, on the basis of which the Philippines became part of the U.S. "first island chain" strategy, the core goal of which is to block China and the Soviet Union's maritime outlet, making it difficult for its navy and air force to break through near sea and into the western Pacific.

As a result, the island chain is no longer a one-way confinement of the United States against China, but has evolved into a front-line confrontation zone of competition between China and the United States. In recent years, while the United States has tightened its ties and restored and expanded its military presence in the Philippines, the United States has also tried to strengthen its armed readiness in the Philippines.
