The French Public Health Agency issued a communique on the 24th, saying that from May 1st to September 22nd this year, the cumulative number of chikungunya cases in the country reached 570, including 65 local transmission incidents.
According to the communique, these cases are mainly concentrated in the warmer southern region of France, including Provence-Alpes-Cote d 'Azur region, Corsica and other epidemic areas in previous years, but for the first time, they have also expanded to the northerly Great Eastern region and Burgundy-Franche-Comte region.
France’s health agency said earlier that this year’s increase in epidemic areas and the emergence of secondary epidemic areas was linked to the good adaptability of the virus strain to the white-collar mosquito, a medium of transmission, and environmental conditions that are more favorable to mosquito reproduction.
The communiqué said the risk of secondary epidemics remains high in other parts of France, as the epidemics remain active in areas such as the southern tourist areas, coupled with the return of summer vacationers.
According to the World Health Organization, chikungunya is spread mainly by Egyptian mosquitoes and white mosquitoes, and patients experience fever, joint pain, muscle pain, headache, rash and other symptoms. Most patients can recover after a week of illness, but joint pain sometimes lasts longer.
