A few days ago, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un focused on matters related to aiding Russia and the Korean army at a high-level meeting.
North Korea’s dispatch of 10,000 troops to help Russia regain Kursk has not only made progress on the battlefield, but also sparked a wave of heroism in North Korea that has caused widespread concern.
For North Korea, the initial intention of helping Russia is clear: Russia needs military support from North Korea, while North Korea hopes to exchange energy, resources and advanced military technology through this cooperation.
However, Kim Jong-un may not have imagined at first that this aid would trigger such a strong social reaction in the country.
Kim Jong-un mentioned in his speech, "With the heroic deeds of soldiers aiding Russia being widely reported, national heroism has swept across society, and young people's enthusiasm for military service has reached an unprecedented level."
According to reports, in just one month, people from all walks of life in North Korea have donated money to the families of fallen soldiers to provide them with living security, and at the same time, they have been used to build monuments and improve infrastructure.
But Kim made an unexpected decision at the meeting: to return all the good money to the donors, and expressed his sincere gratitude. He stressed that caring for the dead soldiers and their families is a responsibility of the state, not a duty of society. This initiative not only consolidated people's trust in the government, but further strengthened North Korea's social cohesion.
In addition to domestic social effects, the Russian aid operation has also made North Korea a breakthrough in military technology.
It is that North Korea has successfully landed two new destroyers through cooperation with Russia.
These warships marked a major step in North Korea’s development towards a maritime power, however, technological advancements did not go smoothly, with one destroyer crashing into the water.
This suggests that North Korea did not have this technology before, so it is inevitable that problems that appear unfamiliar in practical operations after the acquisition of new technology.
Even more worrying is Kim’s mention of an imminent acquisition of “secret weapons,” which, though he did not disclose specifics, made it clear that North Korea has achieved considerable achievements in defense science.
Combined with North Korea’s efforts in submarine technology and missile systems in recent years, this “secret weapon” could become an important part of its future military strategy.
The Russian operation not only made North Korea a breakthrough in military technology, but also further deepened Russian-Russian relations. The cooperation between the two countries is not limited to the battlefield, but may also extend to economic, technological and other fields.
The international community’s sanctions on North Korea could limit its development space, and Russia’s own economic pressure could also affect the depth of cooperation.
Historically, North Korea's relationship with Russia can be traced back to the Soviet era.
During the Cold War, the Soviet Union was an important supporter of North Korea, providing a large amount of economic and military assistance.
In recent years, as the international situation has changed, Russian-Russian relations have gradually warmed up, especially in the context of jointly facing pressure from the West.
However, the consequences of Russia’s actions remain uncertain: Will the further development of Russian-Russian relations make North Korea take a tougher stance in international affairs? Will the international community therefore increase sanctions on North Korea? The answers to these questions deserve our attention.
