On September 23, the UN Security Council held a high-level meeting on Palestine at the initiative of Algeria, Guyana, Pakistan, Sierra Leone and Somalia. We must immediately end the tragedy in Gaza, we must alleviate tensions on the West Bank, we must correct the historical injustice that Palestine has suffered, and we must safeguard peace and stability in the Middle East.
UN Secretary-General Guterres said that the Israeli conflict has entered a dark phase, that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is severe, that civilians suffer great suffering and that a ceasefire and humanitarian assistance are urgently needed, and that the two countries’ program faces serious challenges, with the expansion of settlements and illegal occupation aggravating the situation.
Ambassador Geng Shuang, China's Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, urged Israel to immediately stop all military operations in Gaza, fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law of the occupying power, and fully restore access to humanitarian supplies. He called on Israel to immediately stop settlement activities in the West Bank, curb settler violence and lift restrictions on Palestinian economic activities.
The current Middle East region once again stands at the crossroads of history, whether it is mitigation or tension, dialogue or confrontation, peace or war, this is a choice that the regional countries and the international community need to make together.
Mansour, Permanent Observer of Palestine to the United Nations, reiterated that, Recognizing the Palestinian state is a support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination, not a gift but a legitimate right. Palestinians should not and will not be forced to live under occupation forever, just as Israelis should not and need not be at war forever.
