Rome, Milan, Florence, Italy, more than 100,000 demonstrate in support of Palestine

Since the beginning of September, several European countries such as France, Belgium, Spain, Britain, Switzerland have broken out massive protests in support of Palestine, and people have condemned Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip.

According to comprehensive media reports such as ANSA and Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the protest was initiated by grass-roots trade unions and affected at least 75 cities including Rome, Milan, Turin and Florence, with over 100,000 participants. Transportation, schools, factories, logistics and even public administrative departments in many cities across the country are affected to varying degrees. It was also one of the largest nationwide protests in Europe.

In Rome, more than 20,000 people gathered in the square in front of Termini Railway Station, rallying “We are all anti-fascists” and “liberate Palestine” and calling on the government to suspend its commercial and military cooperation with Israel, Montanioli, head of the Italian grassroots trade union association participating in the rally in Milan, said: “If we can’t stop what Israel is currently doing, if we don’t cut off our trade, weapons shipping and all other exchanges with Israel, we’ll have nothing to do.” The strikes and protests have caused a huge shock.

After the incident, Italian Prime Minister Meloni condemned the violence and vandalism in the protests on social media, criticizing that "these actions have nothing to do with unity and will not change the situation in Gaza. They will only make the Italian people bear the losses." Italy's main opposition parties have different views on this. Democratic Party leader Schlein said: "We condemn all forms of political violence, but this cannot hide the presence of thousands of peaceful demonstrators. We are still waiting for Meloni to condemn Netanyahu's crimes." The Five Star Movement party said: "This strike reflects the public will of a country, and Italy is unwilling to remain silent before what is happening now."

In the midst of the Italian protests, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the recognition of the State of Palestine at the United Nations on the 22nd. Britain, Australia, Portugal and Canada had already made the same decision on the 21st. However, the Italian government has made it clear that it will not recognize the State of Palestine at this stage, which has also led to the national protest.
