Representative of the U.S. House of Representatives to China: China and the United States do not insist on "turning to the same page" at present, but they can "read the same book"

On September 23rd, a delegation of US House of Representatives held a press conference at the US Embassy in Beijing.

On September 23, a delegation of U.S. Congressmen held a press conference at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. In the middle was Adam Smith and in the left was U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue.

Adam Smith, the chief member of the military committee of the U.S. House of Representatives, who led the delegation, said at a press conference that the goal of the visit was to expand the communication channels between the two sides, and there is no doubt that the U.S.-China bilateral relations will have the most profound impact on the world pattern in the coming decades. Therefore, efforts to strengthen this relationship and enhance mutual understanding are especially important. ”He said, “We do have differences, but there will be differences between any country, and the key is to establish mechanisms that allow us to discuss and resolve these differences in a reasonable way.”

Throughout the press conference, one of the key words mentioned most by Smith was dialogue and communication. Smith said, "Many things seem difficult and unsolvable, but once you really start communicating and talk with the attitude of 'Let's try to solve this problem', you will find that the results that can be achieved in the end are incredible. This is exactly what China and the United States need to do."

“I don’t think it’s necessary to force both sides to reach a complete consensus on ‘turning to the same page’, but at least read the same book first,” he said.

For the first official visit of the U.S. delegation to China in six years, the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Guo Jianquan, said on a routine press conference on the 22nd that he hoped that the U.S. side and China will move forward and jointly promote the development of bilateral relations along the right track. Guo Jianquan said that China and the U.S. haveined communication in all fields.

According to Reuters, besides Smith, the rest of the delegation to China include michael baumgartner, Luo Kana and Chrissie Houlahan. Smith served as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee and is currently the Democratic leader of the relevant committee. The committee oversees the U.S. Department of Defense and the armed forces. The delegation paid an official visit to China and held talks with the Chinese side from the 21st. This is the first time that a delegation of the US House of Representatives has visited China since 2019.
