UN human rights experts call for suspension of Israeli participation in international football matches

Xinhua News Agency, Geneva, September 23 (Reporter Shi Song) On the 23rd, a number of United Nations human rights experts called on FIFA and the European Federation of Football Associations to suspend the qualification of the Israeli national team from participating in international football matches, believing that this is "a measure that must be taken to deal with the ongoing genocide in the occupied Palestinian territory".

Eight independent UN experts, including the UN Special Rapporteur on Cultural Rights, Alexandra Shantaki, and the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Occupied Territories of Palestine, Francesca Albanyese, jointly issued a statement stating that the relevant UN Commission of Inquiry has determined that Israel has committed genocide crimes against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and that sports organizations cannot ignore serious human rights violations.

The statement states that the prevention and punishment of genocide is a universally recognized mandatory rule of international law, applicable at any time, to anyone, without exception. The countries where the International Sports Organization has its headquarters, the countries that host international events, and the countries that compete with the Israeli team must consider their obligations, and the issue of genocide cannot be “neutral”.

The statement also said that the boycott is aimed at Israel, not individual players, and "individual players should not be discriminated against or sanctioned because of their origin or nationality".

The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory (including East Jerusalem) and Israel released a report on the 16th stating that Israel committed genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The Committee urges Israel and all other countries to fulfill their obligations under international law, put an end to this genocide and punish the perpetrators.
