Putin said that Russia is confident in the reliability of its deterrent forces, but does not intend to engage in an arms race. Putin suggested that the United States maintain the status quo established by the New Strategic Weapons Reduction Treaty. The new Treaty on the Reduction of Strategic Weapons is the only existing bilateral nuclear arms control agreement between the United States and Russia, signed in 2010 and entered into force on 5 February 2011 for a period of 10 years.On 3 February 2021, the two sides exchanged diplomatic documents to complete the relevant internal procedures for the extension of the new Treaty on the Reduction of Strategic Weapons, and the agreement entered into force on the same day.
