According to Global Magazine, Europe is currently launching a large-scale new "drone wall" defense plan on its eastern border, aiming to deal with the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict by enhancing reconnaissance and deterrence capabilities.
The project, led by Germany, with six NATO countries including Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland and Norway joining, will build a massive network of drones extending from Norway to Poland through a “full-covered, dead-end unmanned surveillance system”.
Currently, two of the eight companies involved in the project say some functionality of the drone wall has been deployed, but they are waiting to see if other European countries are willing to integrate their technology into defense systems.
European Defence Commissioner Andris Kubilius said on Thursday that he plans to meet with defence ministers next week to discuss a project to build a “drone wall” on the eastern border of the EU. An analysis pointed out that the conflict between Poland and Estonia in September with Russia exposed weaknesses in Europe’s and NATO’s defence capabilities.
Janus Tam, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Estonian Defense Corporation, said: “We look forward to this meeting to confirm the seriousness of the issue and they are willing to take action. I hope the next time, not just to make another statement, but to release a very specific plan.”
Agris Kippers, co-founder and CEO of the other development company of the drone wall project, Origin Robot, said the system will be used to deal with "high-speed drones carrying bulletheads" flying at speeds of more than 200 kilometers per hour, and fully automated interception with artificial intelligence technology (AI).
However, there may still be some resistance to the project's advancement.According to the Global magazine, the "drone wall" construction plan in Europe also faces significant financial, technological and other difficulties, and strategic value and potential risks present complex development prospects.
European Commission President Von der Leyen said earlier that Europe must “build a drone wall” on its eastern border, saying it would be a “real-time reactive force that will be jointly developed, deployed andined by Europe.”The EU will also establish a “drone alliance” with Ukraine and provide €6 billion in financial support to “transform Ukraine’s creativity into a battlefield advantage and joint industrialization.”
According to reports, Poland, Finland, and the three Baltic countries, like Russia's neighboring EU countries, have all announced plans to strengthen their borders, but EU officials warned that this method will only be unified and based on common and fully integrated technologies. will be effective. An EU official said that the defense posture of European countries was "too fragmented" and needed "more coordination".
