According to Russia’s RT, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at an event in Gujarat recently, during which he launched a maritime project worth more than $40 billion.
Modi said that India is moving forward steadily with the attitude of "making friends all over the world" and has no major rivals. He added: "In essence, if we have so-called enemies, it is dependence on other countries."
Modi emphasized that only by achieving self-sufficiency can India move toward prosperity and safeguard domestic "peace and stability".
"Our national pride will suffer if we keep letting others dictate... We can't put the future of future generations in the hands of others and put them at risk," Modi said.
Modi attached particular importance to the development of the maritime sector and strongly urged the domestic shipbuilding industry and high-tech industry to revive. He pointed out that fifty years ago, Indian ships accounted for as much as 40% of the country's overseas trade, but today this proportion has plummeted to 5%.
Modi said India is paying billions of dollars annually to foreign shipping companies and is already out of line with the country’s defense budget, adding that this dependence on the outside has caused significant losses to India.
"Whether it's chips or ships, we have to make it right here in India," Modi said firmly.
At the time of Modi's remarks, trade tensions between India and the United States escalated. Last month, Washington imposed a 25% tariff on most of India's imports based on India's purchase of Russian oil, introducing further measures based on similar tariffs after the August talks broke.
In addition, the White House also announced a new annual fee of $10,000 for H-1B visa applications, which India’s IT industry association Nasscom said was mainly targeted at Indian tech workers.
