In early September, Poland suddenly announced the suspension of the transit of China-European aircraft, on the basis of "border security", directly blocked the main European logistics channel, and immediately followed by British Air Force fighter jets flying over Polish airspace, with high-profile support.
In this case, China-Russia quickly reacted, jointly launching a new "Northern Navigation Route" channel, circumventing Poland, and setting up another stove.
This incident seems to be a railway dispute, but in fact it is a realistic contest around channel control, geo-security and international cooperation mode.
Train stop in Poland, train stop in Britain
In early September, the Polish government suddenly suspended the passage of the Central European line through Poland on the grounds that “Belarus constitutes a security threat to the border.”
This move has directly caused the trains to get stuck at the border, the cargo accumulation, and logistics costs to rise, affecting not only Chinese exporters, but also a large number of importers from Germany, France, Belgium and other countries.
However, the so-called "security threat" is not tenable. Belarus's recent border exercises are not large in scale, with less than 10,000 troops mobilized and no border crossing.
On the other hand, Poland has already significantly expanded its troops on the border. It will import 300 M1A2 tanks from the United States in 2023, order 300 K2 "Black Panthers" from South Korea in 2024, and set up local assembly lines.
The "Dragon's Shield" military exercise, which just ended in September 2025, Poland mobilized more than 40,000 troops, obviously actively increasing pressure.
More importantly, this step of Poland's blockade has stumbled on the China-European trade lifeline, China-European line is the main western channel of the "Belt and Road", transporting electronic products, mechanical equipment, clothing textiles and other core commodities.
By blocking the line, Poland has not only disrupted the year-round logistics between Central Europe, but also hit ports and railway companies that depend on the line.
The British action followed closely. On September 19, two Royal Air Force Typhoon fighters flew over Polish airspace. The British side had previously stated that it would firmly support NATO ally Poland and ensure the security of eastern Europe.
This is not an ordinary flight exercise, but a political demonstration, with Britain continuously looking for a diplomatic stage after Brexit, and Poland being the best springboard for its presence in the European continent.
In fact, the defence cooperation between Britain and Poland has long been deepened, and the two countries signed a joint defence agreement in 2023, covering intelligence sharing and joint command mechanisms, this air force deployment is exactly the reflection of the military bond between the two sides.
Poland's abacus is not difficult to understand. It uses "security issues" to package itself as a NATO front-line bridgehead in exchange for more political and military resources. However, this approach undoubtedly regards China-EU economic and trade cooperation as a bargaining chip.
Russian lightning reaction.
On the occasion of Poland's "setting card", the Ministry of Commerce of China announced that it will launch a "Northern Railway" cooperation program with Russia to create an alternative to the Chinese-European line of new polar routes.
This "Northern route", starting from the northeastern port of China and the Russian Far East, through the Arctic Circle to the west, through Norway, Iceland, Finland, Sweden, and finally access to the Western European market.
Compared to land routes, this route, although greatly affected by the ice conditions, but the transportation time is shorter, around Eastern Europe, avoid geological risks, preliminary calculation, the route can save an average of 10 to 15 days of time, cost reduced by about 20%.
More importantly, the northern route is no longer affected by the "stuck neck" of Poland and other countries, and it is a strategic self-rescue for China and Russia under geopolitical pressure.
Russia was previously sanctioned by the West due to the war in Ukraine, and freight at northern ports was greatly reduced. This cooperation is not only beneficial to China, but also a strategic breakthrough for Russia. China uses this to demonstrate the flexibility and resilience of the "Belt and Road" initiative.
A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry made it clear that no country should politicize normal economic and trade cooperation, nor should it undermine the global supply chain under the pretext of so-called "security", which is clearly "named but not named", and has both dimension and strength.
This reaction demonstrated the synergistic ability of China and Russia under the current changing situation. Instead of shouting slogans or fighting, they directly went to projects, contributed funds, and pulled alliances, and responded to a wall by building a road.
The railroad is the front line.
If the China-Europe train is regarded as an ordinary freight line, its strategic value will be underestimated.
Through the Asia-European continent, it is the most stable and cost-effective trade channel between China and the European Union, carrying more than hundreds of billions of dollars of bilateral trade annually.
As a key transit country on this route, Poland holds the "traffic gate" and should have maintained the smooth passage. In the end, it chose to "open and close freely" politically and turn the passage into a weapon.
Poland did so, behind the overall NATO layout, according to the data, the number of NATO military exercises in Eastern Europe in 2025 is increasing than in 2023, and the number of troops stationed continues to increase.
Although the U.S. military's military advisory team in Ukraine has not been publicly deployed, according to multiple media reports, thousands of people have been stationed there in the name of "training." Eastern Europe has transformed from a front-line buffer zone into a springboard for NATO to push forward.
Poland, in line with NATO’s strategy, may in the short term be able to exchange for security commitments and military equipment, but economically it is a real loss.
The China-Europe train transportation business has brought about US $6 billion in revenue, accounting for more than 15% of the national railway logistics. Now that China and Russia are starting a new stove, once the northern route matures, Poland's "toll" may not be collected.
In contrast, the strategy of China and Russia appears to be more long-term, not to block people but to open the way; Not pressure, but alliance.
China has invited the Nordic countries to participate in the Northern Route, and Russia has upgraded its icebreakers and rebuilt its ports to create a new multilateral, stable and sustainable passageway.
In this way, it shows a concept of "co-construction and sharing" instead of "if you want to pass me, you have to listen to me".
More realistically, many European countries are also closely watching the feasibility of the northern route, Finland and Sweden had originally a port trade base with northern Russia, if the new route was successful, they would not be willing to continue to be "drawn by the nose" by Poland.
Poland's "Kabanlie" and Britain's "air cheering" seem strong, but they are actually a continuation of the old-style geo-game thinking. China and Russia use a new way to tell the world that cooperation is the key to solving problems.
The northern route is not an expedient measure, but a redesign of the global logistics route, and it is also a powerful substitute for single dependence.
In today's highly connected global industrial chain, the "security" exchanged by blockade and restriction is ultimately short-lived, real security, interconnection and nothing, joint construction and sharing, and not who can master the "switch", can decide who can do business.
The Chinese-Russian "killer" not only responds, but also looks forward, giving Poland this lesson, not only about railways, but also about the future.
