Breaking-News >> WorldNews 31 journalists killed in Israeli airstrikes on the Yemeni newspaper, the deadliest attack in 16 years
The nonprofit Committee to Protect Journalists said on September 19 that 31 journalists were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Yemen earlier this month, the highest number of journalists killed in a single attack in 16 years. The New York-based Committee for the Protection of Journalists said Israel attacked the September 26 newspaper and the editorial building of the Yemeni daily in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Monday, killing 31 journalists and wounding at least 22 others. The newspaper’s editor-in-chief, Nasel Kadri, said several airstrikes on the editorial building of the newspaper were launched around 16:45 a.m. on September 10, when the newspaper was busy publishing newspapers, a “unprecedented massacre of journalists,” “cruel and without reason.” This is the second-highest number of journalists killed in a single attack, recorded by the Commission for the Protection of Journalists, after a massacre in 2009 in the southern province of Maikindale, Philippines. On November 23, Maikindale Governor-elect Ismail Mangudatau commissioned his wife to submit a campaign application to the local election committee, with a number of supporters and media reporters travelling alongside him, whose fleet was kidnapped by armed men and killed 57 people, including 32 media reporters. The Committee for the Protection of Journalists believes that the Israeli attacks on Yemen are similar to previous airstrikes on Gaza, Lebanon and Iran, failing to follow international law to distinguish between “military targets” and journalists, and defending their actions by defaming journalists and “terrorists” connections, but did not provide any credible evidence. Since the outbreak of a new round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict in October 2023, the Houthi armed forces in Yemen have launched attacks on ships associated with Israel in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and other waters, and used missiles and drones to attack targets in Israel to support Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Israel has repeatedly carried out air strikes on areas controlled by Houthi armed forces in Yemen.
