Egyptian military rally on Sinai Peninsula, Israel demands U.S. pressure on Egypt

According to the Israeli Times on September 20, Israel has made a request to the United States, hoping that the United States will pressure Egypt to stop its military concentration on the Sinai Peninsula. The Israeli government has accused Egypt of mobilizing troops in its border area, violating the peace treaty between the two countries.

The report cited U.S. and Israeli officials as saying that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu raised the question to visiting U.S. Secretary of State Rubio, saying alleged violations included building fighter runways and underground facilities that appear to be used to store missiles. Israeli sources said that while there is no evidence that underground facilities actually store missiles, the Egyptian side did not give satisfactory answers in time to the question.

An Israeli official said Israel decided to ask the U.S. government to intervene after no progress was made in direct negotiations with Egypt.

Lebanon's "Izvestia" reported on the 20th, citing unnamed sources, that before the Israel Defense Forces attacked Gaza City, Egypt had begun to strengthen its troops on the border with Gaza because of concerns that a large-scale withdrawal of Palestinians from the northern Gaza Strip might lead to Palestinians trying to flee to the Sinai Peninsula. According to the report, in the event of such an incident, Egypt will double the number of border troops and transfer heavy weapons and helicopters to the Sinai Peninsula within 72 hours.

According to another Reuters report, people familiar with the matter disclosed that the Trump administration is seeking congressional approval to sell weapons and equipment worth about $6.4 billion to Israel, including 30 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters and 3,250 infantry assault vehicles. Regarding the above-mentioned arms sales, the White House has not yet responded to requests for comment.
