This forum refused to invite the United States to attend the meeting on the grounds that the United States under the Trump administration did not meet the theme of the event.

The forum, jointly hosted by Brazilian President Lula, Chilean President Boris, Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez, Colombian President Petro and Uruguayan President Orsi, is expected to attend about 30 delegates.

The Brazilian government said the Trump administration¡¯s actions were in conflict with the forum¡¯s theme of ¡°defending democracy and opposing extremism,¡± especially as Washington continued to question Brazil¡¯s electoral and judicial system and we couldn¡¯t invite a country that didn¡¯t recognize our basic systems,¡± a Brazilian official told reporters.

Russian media said that Mexico, Germany, France, Canada and other countries have received invitations to attend the meeting, and UN Secretary-General Guterres is also expected to attend the meeting.

CNN said Lula would depart to New York on September 21 and deliver a speech at the United Nations General Assembly on September 23.
