U.S. Senate fails to pass temporary funding bill: Trump says government may shut down in October

News of the 20th of September (Editor 牛占林)According to CNN news reports, on Friday local time, the Republican allocation bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives was not passed in the Senate. Later, U.S. President Donald Trump warned that the likelihood of a U.S. government shutdown was rising due to the Republican-Democratic negotiations falling into a standstill.

Trump told the White House office: “We will continue to negotiate with the Democrats, but I think the U.S. is likely to go into a ‘closed-door’ state in a while.”

During Trump’s first term in office, a month-long government shutdown caused by border wall funding, set the longest record in U.S. history.

Once the government stops, hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be forced to leave, and many government operations will be restricted, but critical services will continue to operate and Americans will still receive social security payments and emails.

Earlier that day, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a seven-week temporary funding bill with 217 votes in favour and 212 against, providing funding to the government until November 21 to avoid the upcoming government shutdown.

In the Republican-controlled Senate, 44 voted in favour and 48 voted against, not reaching the required threshold of 60 votes. It is noteworthy that Republican Senators Rand Paul and Lisa Murkowski voted against, while Democrat Senator John Feitman voted in favour.

It is that the Senate has been suspended for a week after the vote and will meet again no earlier than September 29; the House is scheduled to be suspended until after October 1.

Democrats demanded more health care spending, while Republicans refused to compromise, which ultimately failed the appropriations bill.

Analysts said that the Republican leadership had hoped that as the deadline approached, Democrats would give up their demands and make concessions, otherwise they would bear political responsibility for the disruption of government services.

It remains unclear how the two sides will avoid shutdowns at the moment. Republicans plan to vote again on their proposals as the deadline approaches, hoping that more Democrats will change their attitudes.

Senate Democratic leader and New York State Senator Schumer said after the vote: “The political show must end, let’s sit down and negotiate well.”

Senate Majority Leader Thun, Republican Senator in South Dakota, has shown no signs of changing his stance, saying: “It’s only a few Democrats who need to join the Republican Party that can keep the government open and financially supported and ensure that the allocation process is done as prescribed.”

House Speaker Johnson said: “The ball is now in Schumer’s hands, I hope he can do the right thing and not choose to shut down the government and cause pain to the American people.”

Republican leaders in the House of Representatives also informed lawmakers on Friday that no previously scheduled votes would be held between September 29 and 30. This plan actually forced the Senate to either approve the bill passed by the House of Representatives or risk government shutdowns.
