The protection identity was initially established by the former government, allowing Venezuelans staying in the United States legally to reside and work because of political unrest or natural disasters in their country. Trump administration lawyers argue in documents submitted to the Supreme Court that TPS is not a permanent immigration route, but a temporary measure established due to specific crises, which should now be terminated.

Critics say the move will put a large number of Venezuelan immigrants who have worked and lived in the United States at risk of being deported. Human rights groups and some congressional Democrats have condemned the move as ¡°cruel,¡± stressing that Venezuela is still in a serious economic and humanitarian crisis.
