Breaking-News >> WorldNews UN expert: Pollution problem caused by US military bases in Japan is "extremely serious"
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Toxic Goods and Human Rights, Marcos Aureliana, recently released a report stating that the pollution problem caused by the emission of fluoride and fluoride-based substances from the U.S. military base in Japan is "extremely serious", calling for the improvement of the relevant legal framework to protect citizens from infringement. In November last year, at the invitation of the Okinawa Prefectural Government, Orellana went to Futenma Airport in Ginowan City, the county, and the ancient area of Bianye in Nago City to communicate with nearby residents and attend relevant seminars on the water pollution situation near the US military base. In his subsequent investigation report submitted to relevant United Nations agencies, he said that the water pollution problem caused by US military bases in Japan was "extremely serious". About 70 percent of the U.S. military bases in Japan are concentrated in Okinawa County. In 1996, Japan and the U.S. government agreed to relocate the U.S. military base to the outlying area within the county, and to start land construction projects. For a long time, Okinawa people were plagued by U.S. military base-induced security accidents, aircraft noise, U.S. military crimes and other issues, and demanded that the U.S. military base be completely relocated out of Okinawa County. All-fluoride and polyfluoride-based substances that are difficult to resolve, will accumulate in the environment and human body, and are known as "permanent chemicals".A survey released in Okinawa County in May this year showed that of the 46 inspected sites around the US military base, 28 sites in the water body of such substances are over-limited, the U.S. military base is highly likely to be a source of pollution. Last month, the Okinawa county government set up a committee of public health experts, epidemiologists, clinicians and others to study and discuss the impact of all-fluoride and polyfluoride-based substances on human health. Between 2010 and 2023, there were at least seven leaks of sewage containing all-fluoride and polyfluoride-based substances at the U.S. base in Tokyo, but the U.S. military denied it. In October last year, the U.S. military that the base's sewage pool containing such substances could leak outside the base during the August rains, provoking strong indignation from the Tokyo City government.
