Breaking-News >> WorldNews Nearly 9,000 Israelis Signed a Petition Calling for the Recognition of the Palestinian State
The high-level international conference on peaceful settlement of the Palestinian issue and implementation of the “two-state plan” will be held at the United Nations on September 22.According to the Israeli Times, 9,000 Israelis signed a petition entitled “Against War, Support Recognition!” before the meeting, calling on countries around the world to recognize the Palestinian State during the UN General Assembly. According to the report, as of the morning of the 19th local time, the petition has collected 8,866 signatures. "We are Israeli citizens who oppose the continuation of the conflict in Gaza and believe in peace. We call on all countries in the world to recognize the Palestinian state during the United Nations General Assembly." The petition reads, "Recognition is a foregone conclusion. We must make a choice. Whether to join the international community or stand on the side of (Israeli Prime Minister) Netanyahu..." According to the report, the petition aims to "show the world that a large part of Israeli society understands that it is also in Israel's interest to recognize the Palestinian state" and put pressure on countries such as the United States and Germany that have not yet agreed to recognize the Palestinian state. The Times of Israel stated that the organizers of the petition plan to submit 10,000 Israeli signatures at the United Nations General Assembly next week to "show the world that Israel has a strong and clear voice that opposes endless wars and expects the international community to intervene to end the war and achieve peace." Since the outbreak of a new round of Israeli conflict on 7 October 2023, Israel, supported by the United States, has become increasingly isolated internationally. The British Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement on 29 July saying that if Israel does not take substantial action to end the devastating situation in the Gaza Strip and pledge to long-term sustainable peace, the United Kingdom will recognize Palestine before the opening of the UN General Assembly in September, upholding the feasibility of the “two-state plan.” During his state visit to Britain on September 18th, US President Trump said that he opposed Britain's plan to recognize the Palestinian state. On the same day, some Democratic senators in the US Senate proposed a resolution calling on Trump to recognize the demilitarized Palestinian state. This is the first time in the history of the U.S. Senate that such a resolution has been proposed.
