Several U.S. Democratic Senators Launch Resolution Calling for Recognition of the Palestinian State

Several Democratic senators in the U.S. Congress presented the Senate’s first call for a resolution on recognizing the Palestinian state on Tuesday. The latest poll shows that more and more Americans consider Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip “excessive.”

The US again vetoed.

On the same day, the United States once again vetoed the draft resolution on Gaza in the United Nations Security Council.

The resolution was led by Democratic Senator Jeff Merkel and supported by six other Democratic senators and non-partisan Senator Bernie Sanders, including Chris Van Horne and Tim Kane.

Merkel said in a statement: "This is the first time the Senate has put forward a resolution of this kind, which calls on the United States to recognize the coexistence of a de-militarized Palestinian state and a secure Israel in accordance with international law and the principles of the two-state scheme."

He said,Recognizing the Palestinian State “is the right thing, the United States has a duty to lead, and do it now.”

Trump opposes British plan to recognize Palestinian state

However, U.S. President Donald Trump said at a meeting with British Prime Minister Stammer during his 18th visit to the United Kingdom that he opposed Britain’s plans to recognize the State of Palestine. On the same day, the UN Security Council voted on a draft resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza proposed by 10 non-state members, with 14 of the 15 members voting in favour, and the U.S. permanent member exercised its veto, leading to the draft resolution not being passed. Since the outbreak of the Israeli conflict in October 2023,The United States has repeatedly vetoed the Security Council draft resolution on Gaza

Israel has not yet responded to the proposal proposed by Merkley and others.

Democratic MPs in both houses are seeking support for recognition of the Palestinian state.

According to Reuters, Democratic senators proposing a resolution to recognize the Palestinian State show that as Israeli military operations continue in the Gaza Strip, U.S. Congressmen are shifting attitudes and are more inclined to pressure Israel to end the conflict and alleviate the humanitarian crisis. At the moment, Democratic Congressman Rohit Conner is also seeking support for recognizing the Palestinian State in the House.Since the Republicans have a majority of seats in both Houses of Representatives, it is unlikely that the bill proposed by Democrats will be passed.

More and more Americans oppose Israeli military operations in Gaza

The number of U.S. citizens opposed to Israeli military operations in Gaza is also rising. The latest AP-NORC Public Affairs Research Center poll showed that about half of U.S. adults surveyed thought Israel’s military operations in the Gaza Strip were “excessive,” a proportion that rose by 40 percent compared to about a month after the November 2023 conflict broke out. Among them, about 70 percent of Democratic supporters held this view, up from 58 percent in November 2023, and the proportion of Republican supporters rose from 18 percent to 24 percent.

Furthermore, 45 percent of respondents believe that providing humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in Gaza is “extremely” or “very” important.

Since the current round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict broke out on October 7, 2023, Israel's military operations in the Gaza Strip have killed more than 65,000 Palestinians and led to a serious humanitarian crisis there. Spain, Ireland and Norway announced their recognition of the Palestinian state in May last year. Not only the United Kingdom, but also Western allies of the United States such as France, Canada, and Australia have announced their readiness to recognize the Palestinian state.
