Studies have shown that as a glacier in Alaska gradually melted, a new small island was formed.
The Associated Press reported on the 18th local time that there was originally a hill called Mount Pro in Glacier Bay National Park and Reserve in southeastern Alaska, which was connected with glaciers such as Alsek in the east and adjacent to Alsek Lake in the west. With the melting of Arsek Glacier, the lake continues to expand, and now surrounds Mount Pro, forming a new island. The island covers an area of about 5 square kilometers, and its highest point is more than 300 meters.
Maurice Pinto, a glaciologist at the Nichols College, who has long monitored glacial trends, said he noticed through satellite images that the island appeared between late mid-July and early August this year.
According to the data of the park, there are more than 1,000 glaciers in Glacier Bay National Park and Reserve.
According to Pelto, many glaciers in Alaska have been melting in recent years, but the formation of new islands is rare.
