U.S. Department of Justice sends Trump administration's firing of Fed governors to Supreme Court

Xinhua News Agency, Washington, September 18 According to US media reports, the US Department of Justice submitted the Trump administration's dismissal of Lisa Cook, a governor of the US Federal Reserve Board, to the Supreme Court on the 18th and urged its approval.

In a petition submitted to the Supreme Court, the U.S. Department of Justice said the lower court’s ruling was “a contempt for the many precedents of the Supreme Court.”

Some analysts believe the application could spark a fierce debate in the Supreme Court about the Federal Reserve’s independence.

Trump dismissed Cook on August 25 on suspicion of housing mortgage fraud. Cook denied any misconduct, accused the Trump administration of leaving her because of dissatisfaction with her monetary policy stance, and filed a lawsuit on August 28. The U.S. District Court of the Federal District of Washington issued a decision on September 9, temporarily preventing Cook from being dismissed.

On the 11th of this month, Trump filed an urgent application with a federal appeals court, asking the court to overturn the lower court's ruling before the Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting, so that Trump could fire Cook. The federal appeals court ruled on the 15th that Cook could stay in office and rejected the emergency application.

Cook attended the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee meeting on 16 and 17 and voted in favour of a rate reduction of 25 basis points.

Cook is the first African-born woman to serve as the Federal Reserve board, nominated by former U.S. President Biden.
