World Meteorological Organization: Global water cycle is increasingly disturbed and extreme

The latest report released by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) on May 18, local time, said:The global water cycle is becoming increasingly turbulent and extreme, oscillating between floods and droughts

This 2024 Global Water Resources State Report shows that compared with the average level from 1991 to 2020, only about one-third of the world's river catchments will have normal water flow in 2024. This imbalance has lasted for 6 years, reflecting the increasingly disordered water cycle. Data show that 2024 is the third consecutive year that widespread ice loss has occurred in all glacier regions around the world. The total amount of ice lost throughout the year has reached 450 billion tons. Meltwater of this scale can raise global sea levels by about 1.2 mm in one year. The risks faced by hundreds of millions of coastal residents have increased.

The report also shows that in 2024, the Amazon basin and other parts of South America and southern Africa will suffer from severe droughts, with humidity above normal levels in central, western and eastern Africa, and parts of Asia and Central Europe.
