Breaking-News >> WorldNews Renowned scholar Jeffrey Sachs: The proposal of the Global Governance Initiative is far-reaching and pushes countries to work together to solve global challenges
In a speech, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, with more than 25 years of experience in UN work and 50 years of global affairs, stressed that the UN should adhere to the principles of multilateralism and effectively strengthen global cooperation, while pointing out that China’s Global Governance Initiative has made an important contribution to international cooperation, “with a broad and far-reaching meaning, which can drive countries around the world to work together and solve problems together.” Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, delivered a speech to China Daily reporter Feng Yongbin. Sax pointed out that the United Nations has an urgent need to genuine multilateralism. He proposed to set up UN agencies across the globe instead of continuing to focus its main agencies on the U.S. West. He added: “We can try to set up an UN agency in Beijing or Shanghai. China has significant advantages in promoting sustainable energy transition, especially in large-scale production of clean energy technologies such as solar, wind and batteries, providing solid support for global climate security. We should integrate these capabilities to make it play a bigger role in the world rather than limit its development.” Sachs believes that the fundamental problem facing the United Nations at present lies in the lack of effective cooperation among major powers. "We must restore cooperation between major powers. Many differences are not fundamental conflicts of interests, but irrational oppositions that have been exaggerated or ideologically," he stressed. "The United States should abandon its illusion of'dominating the world '." Looking back on the international situation over decades, he pointed out that the roots of many conflicts have been misunderstood and misunderstood, and that these conflicts often lack a reasonable basis, and that some Western countries are trying to safeguard their privileges through ideology, often leaving us missing historical opportunities for cooperation.” He also said that despite the positive impact the United Nations has had on many countries, its architecture and agenda is still largely dominated by Western powers, calling on China, India and other developing countries to play a more important role in shaping the global future. Finally, he emphasized that as an important international organization established after World War II to safeguard world peace and development, the original intention of the United Nations was to promote the establishment of a sustained and effective cooperation mechanism among major powers to deal with global issues. Faced with the increasingly complex global challenges, major powers should work together to build a cooperation framework, jointly change their thinking mode of dealing with global problems, and shift from focusing on differences to strengthening cooperation. On September 15th, local time, the "New Era Lecture Hall" co-sponsored by China Daily and the Permanent Mission of China to the United Nations was held in the conference hall of the United Nations headquarters in new york, USA. Chinese and foreign celebrities have conducted profound exchanges and dialogues around the theme of "Helping each other in the same boat for 80 years: the inheritance of the mission of the United Nations and the new path of global governance".
