Moriyasu Chizawa, Director of the International Department of Japan's Kyodo News Agency: East Asian media organizations should actively promote exchanges and cooperation to achieve a higher level of interconnection

The 11th ASEAN-China-Japan-Korea "10+3" Media Cooperation Seminar was held in Kunming on the afternoon of September 17, with the theme of "interconnecting and building win-win", 13 mainstream media representatives from different countries spoke or spoke on this topic, and several media guests spoke on the scene around "building new momentum, sharing new opportunities" and other topics.

First of all, I would like to thank the People's Daily Agency for giving me the opportunity to visit the beautiful Kunming and speak at this forum.

The two countries have a long history of exchanges. According to recorded historical data, the exchanges between the two countries date back to more than 2,000 years ago.

As of 2025, the relationship between the two countries has generally shown a relatively stable trend. Currently there are a large number of Chinese tourists to Japan to enjoy the pleasure of sightseeing and shopping; Japanese tourists to China have achieved visa-free, and more Japanese are expected to travel to China in the future. Japan has a Chinese proverb: "The vision is true."

In addition, as the digital transformation continues to advance, the global mass media sector, especially paper journalism, is entering a long-term downward trend.

In short, the current situation facing the industry is: there is not yet established a profitable model that can match newspaper subscription fees.In the digital field, operators at this stage to profits is not easy, and people are willing to pay for "explosion content" is not everywhere visible.

In this context, an accurate understanding of what is happening in China is important for Japan, and it is no exaggeration to call it “explosive money content.”

The Communications Agency was one of Japan’s earliest news agencies to seriously report on China. Even today, we still have a number of Japanese journalists stationed in China, dedicated to understanding China accurately and delivering relevant information to Japan accurately.

On the other hand, it is also unquestionable that the media industry’s revenue has declined year by year due to the long-term decline in newspaper distribution. Over the past decade, with the explosion of the popularity of smartphones, “news free” has become a deeply rooted notion in the public. To be honest, it may be difficult for the mass media to survive unless it can be changed in some way.

The direction I hope to explore in the future is exactly the same as the theme put forward by People's Daily at this seminar: "Interconnection, co-construction and win-win".

I personally believe that media agencies in the East Asian region should actively promote exchanges and cooperation in order to a higher level of interconnectivity and deeper mutual understanding.

Digital technology has made it easy for us to improve the level of connectivity. If we can take advantage of this convenient interconnection advantage and get some inspiration for building a mechanism in which "news organizations from various countries can exchange the content they need with each other and convert it into income", for me, this will definitely be the biggest gain of this participation.

I sincerely hope that the participants of this seminar can play their respective advantages and jointly build a "win-win" relationship.
