Fifty-three years ago today, on May 28th, 1972 (April 16th, 1972 in the lunar calendar), the Duke of Windsor, the king who didn't love the mountains and beauties, died. King Edward VIII abdicated on May 28th, 1972. The Duke of Windsor, who gave up the British throne in 1936 and married Wallis Simpson, an American girl who had been divorced twice, died at his home near Paris at the age of 77. The Duke, who reigned for 325 days as King Edward VIII of England, was born on June 23, 1894, the eldest son of George V. The popular Prince of Wales attended the Royal Naval College and served in World War I with the Grenadier Guards. In 1930, he met Mrs. Simpson.
