Breaking-News >> TodayHistory On September 17, 1980, former President of Nicaragua, Somozha, was killed in a bombing.
Forty-five years ago today, on September 17th, 1980 (August 9th, 1980 in the lunar calendar), former President Somoza of Nicaragua was bombed and killed. Nicaragua, located in the middle of Central America, was originally a Spanish colony. It gained independence in the late 1830s and established the Republic of Nicaragua. Because of its important geographical location, it was invaded by the United States twice. After the United States supported the Somoza family to enter the political arena of Nicaragua, two generations of three Somoza presidents ruled Nicaragua for half a century, which made the Nicaraguan people unbearable. The first president of the Somoza family was Anastasio Somoza Garcia. Under the instigation of the United States, he designed to kill General Sandino, a national hero of Nicaragua, and then became the president of Nicaragua through a palace coup. He used the political and economic power in his hands to plunder the people's fat, plunging the country into a serious economic crisis, but his family became one of the largest industrial owners in the western hemisphere. Somoza Garcia was shot and killed by a patriotic youth in 1956. His son, Luis Somoza, succeeded him as President of Nicaragua. After he came to power, he ruled Nicaragua more cruelly than his father's. In 1967, when he fell ill, his younger brother Somoza de Vaile became president of Nicaragua, and the Nicaraguan people were still in dire straits. 60% of the country's farmers are hungry, and 45% of urban residents live in extreme poverty. In 1972, a major earthquake struck Managua, the capital, killing 30,000 people and leaving 250,000 homeless. Under such circumstances, the Somoza family actually embezzled the relief materials and funds donated by foreign countries. International public opinion also called Somoza "the most greedy ruler in the world". The cruel rule of the Somoza family has intensified the ethnic and class contradictions in Nicaragua, and the people's resistance struggle has never stopped. The "Sandinista National Liberation Front", named after a national hero, has always persisted in armed struggle and has been growing and growing. In 1979, the troops of the Sandinista National Liberation Front launched a full-line attack on the capital, Managua. Somoza de Vailes was forced to resign, seeing that the tide was over. Since then, the Somoza dynasty, which ruled Nicaragua for 43 years, has completely perished. Somoza first fled to the United States, then to the Commonwealth of Bahamas and Guatemala in the Caribbean, and finally to Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay. Although Somoza still lives a prosperous life, he is a "frightened bird" after all. His house is closely guarded by security guards, and no matter where he goes, he always takes bodyguards with him. But he didn't escape the doom of being assassinated in the end. On September 17th, 1980, when Somoza was driving through Spanish Street near downtown Asuncion, he was suddenly attacked by six unidentified militants. Somoza was shot by more than twenty bullets and killed on the spot, thus ending his exile. The attackers evacuated safely. It was not until 1983 that the Argentine Gorialan Mello, who led the operation, disclosed the events to the press. Mello has been compiled by Argentine authorities for more than ten years. After leaving Argentina, he joined the Southern Front in Nicaragua under the Sandinista Frente de Liberación Nacional. He saw that the Nicaraguan people were demanding that Somoza, who had escaped, repay his blood, so he decided to assassinate him. After detailed investigation and careful deployment, the assassination was finally completed. News raw data sources → https://www.abtool.cn/today_detail/13oa.html 17WorldNews[2025.09.18-00:19] 访问:86
