The first meeting of the African National Assembly was held in South Africa on 20 June 1990.
Thirty-five years ago today, on June 20th, 1990 (May 28th, 1990 in the lunar calendar), the ANC met for the first time in South Africa. The Executive Committee of the African National Congress (ANC), headquartered in Lusaka, met in South Africa for the first time in 30 years on June 20, 1990. Except for four members, including Oliver Tambo, president of the ANC who is treating diseases abroad, and Nelson Mandela, vice president of the ANC who is visiting abroad, the other 31 members of the ANC Executive Committee attended the three-day meeting. Pavard, a member of the Executive Committee, said that it was on the agenda to study some flexible measures in sanctions against Africa. Pavard said that the ANC may agree to lift the international sanctions on sports, education and culture in South Africa in response to the reform of South African President De Klerk. On February 2nd, De Klerk announced the lifting of the ban on the organization of the ANC, paving the way for the ANC to hold its executive committee meeting in South Africa. On June 19th, South Africa's three-chamber parliament passed a bill to abolish the apartheid law in public places. The South African government and the ANC Working Committee on the Release of Political Prisoners have reached an agreement that the South African government may release political prisoners in exchange for the ANC's abandonment of armed struggle.
