Today, 35 years ago, on March 12, 1990 (February 16, 1990), Gorbachev was elected the first president of the Soviet Union. The third (very) People's Congress of the Soviet Union, held in Moscow from March 12 to 15, partly amended the Constitution of the Soviet Union and decided to establish a presidential post with widespread authority. General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Soviet Union Gorbachev voted 1329 for, 495 against, 54 voices invalidated as the first president of the Soviet Union.
