Today, 35 years ago, on March 12, 1990 (February 16, 1990), Gorbachev was elected the first president of the Soviet Union. The third (very) People's Congress of the Soviet Union, held in Moscow from March 12 to 15, partly amended the Constitution of the Soviet Union and decided to establish a presidential post with widespread authority. General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Soviet Union Gorbachev voted 1329 for, 495 against, 54 voices invalidated as the first president of the Soviet Union. In late March, Gorbachev appointed 13 members of the presidential committee, including Foreign Minister Sergei Denazer, First Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers Maslowov, Minister of Defense Gorbachev and President of the National Security Committee Khrushchev, etc. According to the legislation passed
