Today, 130 years ago, on 15 January 1895 (Lunar Calendar 20 December 1894), Finnish biochemist Wirtan was born. Finnish biochemist Wirtan was born in Helsinki, Finland (which was then part of Russia) on 15 January 1895, and in Helsinki on 11 November 1973. Wirtan discovered a method of storing feed that minimizes the loss of proteins and vitamins; he carefully studied the nitrogen properties of soybeans and discovered the properties of a tumor bacterium with nitrogen; he also discovered that the use of organic nitrogen compounds to grow plants is very important. Because of Wirtan's outstanding work in agricultural chemistry, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1945.
