On 21 January 2006 (Calendar 22 December 2005), Ibrahim Rugova, President of Kosovo, aged 61. Ibrahim Rugova (2 December 1944 – 21 January 2006) was the 1st President of Kosovo, and the leader of Kosovo’s main political party the Democratic Union of Kosovo (LDK) led Kosovo’s Albanians since 1989 in a non-violent protest against the deprivation of autonomy, so Rugova was regarded as a pacifist, and in December Rugova established the Democratic Union of Kosovo. After a long struggle with Serbia, Rugova bombed South Slavia in 1999 and was later governed by the United Nations. Rugova was also honored by Kosovo’s Albanians as the “father of the country”.
