Today, fifty years ago, on May 16, 1975 (April 6, 1975) Japanese women climbed the Mount Everest for the first time. On May 16, 1975, a woman first conquered the Mount Everest. A 35-year-old Japanese, Tōdō Yi Purō, climbed the world’s tallest peak at 12:30 p.m. on May 16, local time. Followed by a Serbian male guide, she left 15 Japanese companions from the 24885-foot high camp and reached the summit about five hours later. Mrs. Purō was the captain of this expedition. Over the past 22 years, a total of 35 men climbed the Mount Everest, and on May 29, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and the Nepali Tan Sinnoor Carter climbed the summit for the first time.
