On December 9, 1949, after the National Party Yunnan President Luhan in Kunming Electricity Uprising, Chiang Kai-shek appointed Tonga as Deputy Commander-General of the Army and Commander-in-Chief of the Eighth Corps, leading the Ministry to continue to resist in the southern region. In order to exterminate Tonga in the country's border village, the People's Liberation Army quickly advanced from Guangzhou to Yunnan, and on January 11, 1950 occupied the river gate, blocked the border of China-Vietnam; on January 16, it occupied itself, controlled the airport, cut off Tonga's escape to Vietnam
