Alfonso I of Spain has died.

Alfonso I el Batallador (about 1073 – 8 September 1134) King of Aragon and Navarra (about 1104 – 1134).

Alfonso I was the son of King Sancho I of Aragon. He married Uralca (the widow of Count Raymond of Burgundy), the daughter-in-law of the Kingdom of Castile. After the death of King Alfonso VI of Castile (of Aragon), Alfonso I actually inherited all four Christian nations on the Iberian Peninsula (Aragon, Navarre, León, and Castile). But because the Castilians refused to accept his rule, Alfonso I had to abandon the thrones of León and Castile, leaving them to Alfonso VII, the son of Uralcal and his predecessor.

Alfonso I was a representative of the Spanish recovery movement. In 1118 he seized Zaragoza from the Moors, and in 1120 he defeated the great army of the Mubarak dynasty that besieged Zaragoza. Alfonso I entered Andalusia and even southern France several times.

In 1134 Alfonso I was seriously wounded in the Battle of Fraca, and soon died.

Review: With the Moors for hundreds of years, the Spaniards at that time were quite brave.
