Germany's first prime minister after World War II

Ardern (1876-1967) was the first prime minister of the Federal Republic of Germany (1949-1963). Born in the Catholic family of Cologne on 5 November 1876, he died on 19 April 1967. He served as mayor of Cologne during the First World War in 1917; from 1920 he served as a member of the Central Organization of the Provincial Parliaments of Prussia, and as chairman in 1928. He was imprisoned twice during the Nazi rule. In 1946 he was elected president of the Christian Democratic Union. In the United States, Britain, and the United Kingdom, he took office as chairman of the Federal Assembly, formulating a constitution for the upcoming Federal Republic. In August 1949, he served as prime minister. During his tenure, the Federal Germany regained sovereignty, regained national power and gained speech
