Today, 96 years ago, on August 29, 1929 (Lunar Calendar July 25, 1929), the U.S. Navy created a new record for global navigation. On August 29, 1929, the Grave-Zipberlin Navy completed its historic global flight and returned to Leipzig, New Jersey. The Zipberlin flight, which lasted 21 days and 7 hours and 26 minutes, created a new record for global navigation. The ship, carrying 16 passengers and 37 crew members, left Leipzig in the early morning of August 8. It only stopped 3 times on its flight of 19,500 miles, with its first stop at the headquarters of the Port of Utrecht in Germany, from which it flew through Siberia to Japan, landed in Tokyo, then flew over the Pacific Ocean to Los Angeles, and finally landed in Leipzig at 847 am.
