20 May 1980: Referendum in Quebec against separation from Canada
Today, 45 years ago, on May 20, 1980 (April 7, 1980), Quebec province referendum voted against the separation from Canada. On May 20, 1980, the Quebec province referendum vehemently opposed the separation of this predominantly French-speaking province from the Canadian Federation. The vote resulted in a victory for Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau and Quebec province Liberal Party leader Claude Ryan. In a strong opposition to the separation, both had pledged to change the Canadian Constitution. Quebec’s ruling forces failed to win the majority of the French-speaking voters who represented 80% of the 62.000 inhabitants of Quebec.
