On May 18, 1953, Jacqueline Cochrane became the first woman to drive an aircraft over the noise barrier. She was one of the best pilots in the United States. She drove a Canadian-made F-86 Peabody jet fighter aircraft. The aircraft flew over the Edward Air Force Base 100 km north of Los Angeles.
