Today, 80 years ago, on July 30, 1945 (Calendar June 22, 1945), the U.S. Navy’s Indianapolis was sunk by a Japanese submarine in the Philippine Sea. On July 30, 1945, the U.S. Navy’s Indianapolis heavy cruiser was sunk by the Japanese submarine I-58 in the Philippine Sea. 300 of the 1,200 soldiers on board were killed on the ground, and the remaining about 900 sailors were discovered by the U.S. Navy’s patrol aircraft four days later, and only 317 survived.
