On July 7, 1941, the United States captured Iceland.
Today, 84 years ago, on July 7, 1941 (Lunar Calendar, June 13, 1941), the U.S. Army took over Iceland. On July 7, 1941, U.S. President Roosevelt informed Congress that the U.S. Navy had landed in Iceland long ago to prevent German occupation of Iceland. The operation was taken at the request of the Icelandic government. The purpose was to ensure that U.S. military supplies were shipped to Britain in a timely manner. Though some members of Congress opposed the government to take such action and feared further involvement in the turmoil of European conflict, it was agreed by most members of Congress that it was necessary to clear German threats at sea. The British government shrugged hands praising Roosevelt's decision as "good news".
