Later, Ernst Abbe joined the Zets Corporation for the design and research of microscopy, and made an important contribution to the theory of microscopy, thus becoming a partner of Carl Zets. Ernst Abbe had a foundation in the study of optical glass. In 1884, Ernst Abbe and Otto Schout established the Shuttle Glass Factory in Jena. In 1886, Ernst Abbe hired the optical designer Paul Jungdorf as director of the Department of Optical Design.

In 1866 he collaborated with C. Zets to develop optical instruments, promoting the development of the German optical industry. With the focus of microscopy, his two important contributions were: 1 the linear conditions in geometry optics, determining the limits of the ability of the microscope to distinguish on the visible band of light, one of the basic foundations of optical design so far; 2 the two-step imaging theory in fluctuating optics - the Abel imaging principle. A. B. Porter proved this theory in 1906 with experiments. It became one of the basic theories of optical transformation in recent years with laser as experimental conditions. In 1888, after the death of Carl Zeiss, Ernst Abbe became the owner of the company.

In addition to his contribution in optics, Ernst Abbey felt the hard treatment of the workers at the time, and promoted the system of 8 hours of work per day, paid leave, paid sick leave, retirement, etc. in ZEISS, becoming the pioneer of the modern employee protection system.

In commemoration of Ernst Abbe's contribution to optics, Mount Abbe on the moon is named after him.
