Peacekeeping Forces for Developing Countries Established on 1 March 1961
On March 1, 1961, President Kennedy announced the establishment of the Peace Corps to assist developing countries. Today, March 1, 1961, the President’s brother-in-law, Sagan-Schliew, organized an interim agency. The President had asked Congress to make long-term plans if the plans could prove that the Peace Corps and Schliew were successful. Kennedy anticipated that the volunteers were mostly young people who had just left the school and would go to secondary schools in less developed countries to teach, assist in health education and consulting on agricultural issues. At a news conference, Kennedy acknowledged that “things would not be so easy.”
