On January 4, 1943, the Soviet Defense Committee issued an order requiring the design of a 152mm self-propelled cannon based on the KB-1C heavy tank base within 25 days. On February 7, the Trojanov-led design team and the engineering technicians of the Chelyabinsk tank city, together, designed a sample car, named the SU-152 self-propelled cannon.
