On November 29, 1973, Gansu discovered a complete sword-like fossil.
Fifty-two years ago today, on November 29th, 1973 (November 5th, 1973 in the lunar calendar), a complete sabertooth fossil was found in Gansu. In November, 1973, a saber-tooth fossil was excavated on the banks of Malian River in Banqiao Commune, Heshui County, Gansu Province. This sabertooth skeleton belongs to an elderly individual, with a height of about 4 meters, a body length of about 8 meters, a incisor length of 3.03 meters and a incisor diameter of 32 cm (50 cm at the proximal end). It is one of the largest sabertooth known individuals in the world. Saber-tooth elephants are a kind of extinct ancient elephants. They lived during the Tertiary period 3 million years ago and less than 10,000 years ago. They are larger than modern elephants, with longer incisors and transverse ridges on the chewing surfaces of molars. Fossils of this kind of elephant have only been found in Asia and Africa so far, but they are all limited to sporadic parts such as skulls or teeth. The skeletons found in Heshui County this time are the most complete saber-tooth fossils found in the world at present. It provides important scientific data for comprehensively and accurately understanding the physical form of saber-tooth elephants and other theoretical problems, and at the same time provides important paleontological basis for stratigraphic analysis from the Tertiary to the beginning of Quaternary and the study of paleogeographic environment and paleoclimatic conditions in Longdong area.
