Tibet University is the largest comprehensive university in Tibet, has formed a disciplinary system covering 10 university disciplines such as economics, law, engineering, medicine, the scale of the school reached 8,000 people. Tibet University was identified as the national "211 Project" focus building university, marking Tibet's higher education entered a new stage of development.

Tibet University is the only comprehensive university in Tibet Autonomous Region. It was formed by the merger of the former Tibet University and the former Tibet College of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry in 2001. Both schools before the merger have a glorious history and tradition.

The school's existing headquarters in Lassa and two campuses in Linzhe, covering an area of 174,7 million square meters (2,621 acres), building area of 38,9 million square meters, campus green area of 46,7 million square meters, in 2005 received the title of "civilization school" of the autonomous region, and in 2007 received the title of "green school" of the state.
