Twenty-eight years ago today, on August 30th, 1997 (July 28th, 1997 in the lunar calendar), a forest fire broke out in Indonesia. A villager was helpless when he saw that a forest fire would devour his home. In August, 1997, fires broke out in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia. So far, at least 300,000 hectares of forest land were burned and 271 people were killed. Most of these fires were caused by plantation companies burning wasteland, and Indonesia's worst drought in 50 years this year contributed to the fires.
